Normally I would greet you all with a “Happy Whisk(e)y Wednesday,” but with everything going on it can be a bit hard to find the “happy” of the current situation. My write up this week will be brief. The last few days have been tough for everyone as we face shutdowns and limited hours at many of our favorite establishments, including our own store. The stress of COVID-19 is being felt all over, and we want you to know that we want to help any way we can. Our bar is closed for the foreseeable future, but we do have plans to unveil some of your favorite cocktails in a “To-Go” offering so you can enjoy at home. If premixed isn’t your thing, we would love to help you find all the ingredients necessary to make your own. For those that are higher risk or immunocompromised, we want to still be able to serve you, so here’s how. Call the store and let us know that you would like to place an order for pick up. We will gather all of your desired goods and bring them out to your vehicle so you don’t have to risk exposure. We are regularly sanitizing all surfaces that people come in contact with, but we understand those that wish to take further measures to keep themselves safe. As a small business, we appreciate each customer that chooses to shop with us, and the outpouring of support that we have received through social media, email, and in person has been incredible. Tough times don’t last, tough people do, and I firmly believe that we have some of the toughest staff out there, ready to weather this storm and return to serving you at full capacity as soon as possible. We’ll continue to keep you updated with the business happenings as things return to normalcy.
To combat large gatherings, we’ll be putting a hold on the weekly bottle draw. Tom and I are brainstorming ideas to be able to bring it back next week, but for at least this week we will not be releasing any rare/allocated items. Believe me when I say this really bums me out. Whisk(e)y Wednesday with Zac has very quickly become my favorite day at the store and I am very thankful for all of you that have come out to share it with me. We still want to celebrate Whisk(e)y Wednesday, and to do that we are offering 30% off the list price on all whisk(e)y regardless of category. This is a great chance to snag a bottle that you’ve had your eye on, but haven’t purchased yet. I’ll be around all day to talk whisk(e)y for anyone looking to talk shop, and combined with our Spring Wine Sale, now is a great time to stock up.
Whiskey With Z
With our store hours being shortened, I am finding myself with a bit more time on my hands. When that happens, I quickly resort to my favorite activity which is tasting through whiskies. I got a chance last Friday to get together with some friends (new and old) to taste some ryes. We had 19 in total ranging from E.H. Taylor Rye all the way to some bootlegged Templeton Rye. It was a hell of a time and we ate pretty good too. It was nice to get out of the apartment and try some things that I hadn’t had before, and the conversation was great as well. I want to give a special thank you to the South Dakota Whiskey Union for inviting me to join them, and I am looking forward to the next opportunity to join them in drinking the good stuff.
Besides last Friday, I’ve been finding myself digging into my stash of home goods and rediscovering some items that I had tucked away. One of those bottles is an older Booker’s selection that I picked up about a year and a half ago. The Booker’s Backyard BBQ has been a staple for me when Kenadi and I enjoy ribs or a nice bbq pork loin, but during the colder months I don’t dabble with it too much. We made ribs the other night so I busted it back out and was delighted to find it to be just as delicious as I remembered. It’s hot, like really hot, but it has a beautiful burnt brown sugar sweetness to it that complimented the ribs nicely. I’d love to find another bottle, but I know that much like the other Booker’s it moves off shelves quickly and finding a bottle on the secondary would cost me an arm and a leg. I guess I’ll just have to appreciate what I have left and find something new once it’s gone.
