1792 Sweet Wheat
As we have now reached the final 10 days of the 2020 Holiday Countdown Calendar, I have to say, I am impressed with myself! I thought for sure, by now, I would have completely forgotten a day, but I haven’t! May have been late a couple of times, but I have not let you down with the details of these fun little gems!
1792 Sweet Wheat is one of my favorite all time bourbons. Yet, I do not own a bottle. Never have. I keep selling the ones we get, but have yet to exercise my “owner’s prerogative” and keep a bottle for myself! That may have to change the next time we get one.
What is a “wheated bourbon”? Wheated bourbon is simply that, it has wheat in the mash bill. Often replacing rye as one of the flavoring grains, which is the case here. It is also the case with popular “wheaters” like Weller and Pappy Van Winkle. The result is a bourbon that has very delicate, soft and sweet notes that just drive the flavors of caramel, vanilla, cinnamon and other spices. It is also bottled at 91.2 proof, giving it even more drinkability, without diminishing the character.
- Preparation: None, this drinks delicious right out of the bottle at room temp.
- Glass: Glencairn or Double Old Fashioned
- Cocktail Potential: I don’t think so. It’s so good right out of the bottle, I can’t say I would do anything other than a couple of cubes.
- Availability: We get roughly 10-12 bottles of this per year, and it kind of comes in whenever the powers-that-be decide we are worthy. Keep your eyes peeled.
Tom’s Tasting Note: This bourbon is so good. I really don’t know why I don’t have a bottle of this in my own stash. I love the big caramel notes, ripe fruit and silky smooth texture. And even only at 91.2 proof, it has a long lasting Kentucky Hug. Enjoy!
Delicate is definitely the correct word for this.
At first taste I thought there was going to be an explosion of heat, but it rounds itself off very nicely.
Had to search for the fruit but it is there on the font of the tongue right away before it fades into a dry caramel.
Shorter finish than I would have expected for the initial taste as well.
1792 is one of my favorites, but I usually stick to their barrel proof. This would be a nice alternative when I’m not in the mood to be punched in the tongue with heat and flavor.
Really enjoyed this one. I too am more familiar with the 1792 full proof, but this was a nice, easy sipping wheated bourbon.
Yum
Notes of Apple on the front, very light taste. Delicate for sure. I think this would be great for someone who says they don’t like whiskey.
This may be my favorite yet. Very smooth!
