How about a little rum for this Tiki Tuesday! Rum hit the top five most interesting spirits of 2021 because of there is a bit of an impending rum renaissance. Be on the lookout in 2022 for more exciting rum offerings and, hopefully, single barrel selections.

White Cap Edition – Ron Zacapa Centenario XO Solera Gran Reserva

The Ron Zacapa XO is a premium offering made from a selection of 6 to 25-year-old column-distilled rums that have been aged in a solera consisting of bourbon, Oloroso sherry, and Pedro Ximenez sherry barrels. After being carefully chosen, the rums are then meticulously married to create a smooth, sweet, and sophisticated spirit which is then cut with pure water before finally being packaged in a voluptuous bottle that simply screams elegance.

Tom’s Tasting Note: This is heaven in a glass. Checking all of the boxes of some of my favorite flavors on the planet… Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry, and Pedro Ximenez… To truly appreciate the flavors in this rum, you have to know what goes into it. I highly encourage you to invest (they aren’t very expensive) into some Oloroso Sherry and Pedro Ximenez Sherry. We Lustau brand in both expressions and would be a great addition to your holiday beverage offerings. A delicious balance of mature, toasted oak, dry nuts and orange peel. On the palate you will find sweetness, stewed fruit, dark cherries, chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon. The finish is long, ginger spicy and complex.

Black Cap Edition – Flor de Caña 18-Year-Old Rum

When we were putting together the Black Cap Edition of the 2021 Spirited Holiday Countdown Calendar, finding a rum that would be comparable to the Zacapa XO was challenging, but I didn’t have to look too hard. Flor de Caña 18-Year-Old is a sugar-free 18-year-old, ultra-premium rum that is sustainably produced (Carbon Neutral & Fair Trade certified). From a 5th generation family estate, it is naturally aged without artificial ingredients, distilled 100% with renewable energy and KOSHER certified.

Tom’s Tasting Note: Flor de Caña 18-Year-Old was my “aha” moment for quality rum about 12 years ago. We were fairly lasered in on the growth of brown spirits from Scotland, USA and Ireland that we would frequently look passed aged rum when it came to selecting high quality spirits. Then came along Flor de Caña. With expressions in 7 Year, 12 Year, 18 Year and older (not currently available) I was floored by the wildly complex nature of these offerings, but especially the 18. Brilliant amber color with a nose of dried nuts and caramel. The palate is soft with vanilla and spices and a long, rich finish.
