Woodford Reserve
Good morning and Happy Whisk(e)y Wednesday! As we roll through Bourbon Heritage Month, tonight we offer a special flight featuring Woodford Reserve. So here is a little history!
The story of Woodford Reserve is a bridge between the origins of American whiskey and its modern premium renaissance.
The Early Pioneer Years (1812–1838)
The roots of the distillery stretch back to 1812, when Elijah Pepper began distilling spirits on Glenn’s Creek in Woodford County, Kentucky. After his death, his son Oscar Pepper took over and hired a Scottish chemist named Dr. James C. Crow (See last week’s WW Blog Post – Whisk(e)y Wednesday – 9/16/2026 – JJ’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars.)
Together in the 1830s and 1840s, Pepper and Crow revolutionized American whiskey production. Crow applied scientific rigor to the process, perfecting sour mash fermentation, industrial barrel charring, and systematic aging in oak. Many of the legal specifications for modern Bourbon trace back to Crow’s methods refined on these grounds.
Transitions and Preservation
In 1878, the property was purchased by Leopold Labrot and James Graham, becoming known as the Labrot & Graham Distillery. They expanded the site and erected the distinctive limestone stone buildings that still stand today.
Though production paused during Prohibition and suffered during mid-century shifts in consumer taste toward lighter spirits, the historic architecture and natural limestone water source remained intact.
The Birth of Woodford Reserve (1996)
In 1993, Brown-Forman (which had briefly owned the property mid-century) repurchased the historic site, fully restored the 19th-century stone structures, and installed copper pot stills imported from Scotland.
In 1996, they officially introduced Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey to the market. Positioned as a small-batch, super-premium bourbon, it combined old-world pot-still distillation with column-still spirits, creating a distinctively rich profile with notes of dried fruit, vanilla, and spice.
Today, the distillery is designated a National Historic Landmark, serving both as a functional distillery—producing the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby—and as a living monument to Kentucky’s distilling heritage.

We are nearly complete with our renovation of JJ’s Axes & Ales with some pretty big changes! Stop in and see what we did. We are leaning into a few more fun activities outside of axe throwing. Adding a couple more pool tables, dart boards and a Golden Tee for starters. We have also expanded our hours. We are now open to the public again Tuesday through Thursday 4:00pm to 10:00pm and Friday & Saturday 12:00pm to 10:00pm. No reservations required, just stop in!
