Old Forester
Good morning and Happy Whisk(e)y Wednesday! As we roll through Bourbon Heritage Month, tonight we offer a special flight featuring Old Forester Distillery. So here is a little history!
Old Forester isn’t just another bourbon—it’s the brand that basically invented the concept of bottled, trustworthy whiskey.
Back in 1870, a pharmaceutical salesman named George Garvin Brown got tired of sketchy bar owners watering down whiskey or spiking it with tobacco juice and iodine (yes, seriously). His fix? Seal the bourbon in glass bottles and sign his name on the label as a personal guarantee of quality. It was a total game-changer.
- 1870: The First Sealed Bottle – George Garvin Brown launches Old Forester in sealed glass bottles—making it the first bourbon in America guaranteed not to be tampered with.
- 1920–1933: The Prohibition Hack – When the U.S. went dry, Old Forester secured one of just six Kentucky permits to produce whiskey for “medicinal” use. Doctor’s prescription? You got your Old Forester.
- 1940s: Joining the War Effort – During WWII, Old Forester paused regular whiskey production to distill industrial alcohol for military use before bouncing back as a staple of post-war cocktail culture.
- 2018: Home Sweet Home – Old Forester opened a dynamic, state-of-the-art distillery right on Louisville’s historic Whiskey Row—back in the exact same spot where the brand was located before Prohibition.
Other Fun Facts

Unbroken Streak: Thanks to that medicinal permit, Old Forester is the only bourbon continuous brand sold before, during, and after Prohibition by the exact same founding family.

Still Family-Owned: The brand is still owned by Brown-Forman (the parent company behind Jack Daniel’s and Woodford Reserve), keeping George Garvin Brown’s legacy in the family for over 150 years.
- JJ’s & Old Forester – After moving to the Whiskey Row distillery in 2018, JJ’s was one of the first retailers in the country to secure single barrels in the new distillery. Old Forester Single Barrel – 2nd Edition and Old Forester Single Barrel “Winter Warmer”. “Winter Warmer” was kind of an accidental purchase. When tasting the whiskies that were offered, this one didn’t appeal to any of the group. Until it sat there for a bit. As it opened up, it became a whole different experience. Fun fact about this whiskey. It was the last barrel to be sourced from a non-climate controlled warehouse before Old Forester switched forced heat and air to maintain consistency in their aging process. I still have a couple bottles at home.
JJ’s Axes & Ales
We are nearly complete with our renovation of JJ’s Axes & Ales with some pretty big changes! Stop in and see what we did. We are leaning into a few more fun activities outside of axe throwing. Adding a couple more pool tables, dart boards and a Golden Tee for starters. We have also expanded our hours. We are now open to the public again Tuesday through Thursday 4:00pm to 10:00pm and Friday & Saturday 12:00pm to 10:00pm. No reservations required, just stop in!
