Knob Creek Single Barrel 17h Edition – MQS75

Knob Creek Single Barrel – 17th Edition MQS75

Sometimes good is just, well, good. When we were searching through library bottles to add to the 2022 Spirited Holiday Countdown Calendar I stumbled upon a small glass vial. It was labeled MQS75. It was a small 1/2oz vial much like what you are pouring into your glass as we speak.

When we released MQS75 in October of 2021, we were still engaging quite a few people with “to go” flights. A program we started during the pandemic to have some fun with people stuck at home. This vial came from one of those flights which was never claimed by the whoever ordered it. And I am kind of glad about that, because it gave me an impromptu opportunity to revisit it. And damn, this stuff is good.

Now, why are we using this one in this calendar when it was released in 2021? Well, mostly, again, it’s about the journey of your senses. It’s also about some of the more exciting whiskies and spirits I have tasted throughout 2022. So, based on my discovery under the counter, here we are.

Dad has picked two barrels in his much-lauded career as a bourbon barrel picker. He had a little help from myself and my siblings, but this pick, and the last one, were mostly him and what he enjoys. You may remember, this pick was done at my parents’ house when mom was still alive back in April of 2021 as we all gathered to celebrate my parents 53rd wedding anniversary. It was an evening full of laughing, crying, eating and drinking, and one I will never forget. Mom didn’t assist in the selection, but she was there, and it’s the last time I remember us all together that felt normal. This whiskey takes me back to that happy place.

Tom’s Tasting Notes: Much like Dad’s 1st pick, MQS70, this one is super smooth for 120.0 proof, but it has a spicy edge to it that just makes you drool when you stick your nose in the glass. So on the nose we have toasted caramel, spice, sweet vanilla and toffee with a bit of oak. On the palate it is rich and mouth-filling with flavors of caramel, that spice again and toasty oak carrying through a very long and tasty finish. Cheers Pop!
